Plone’s default look
Plone’s standard template is quite familiar to many of us now, but lets remind ourselves:

There’s also NuPlone which was brought in with Plone 3, as used on quite a few sites (but nowhere near as many as the standard):

During the sprint at Naples some clever little monkeys were working on plonetheme.pizza which looks pretty damn snazzy. It’s not quite ready yet, but so far looks like this:

As you can see, this seems mostly based on the default with a few influences from NuPlone, specifically the way tabs are rendered. Most strikingly it’s very blue to match our brand spanking new logo. This got me thinking, the colour scheme in the default theme matches Vidar Andersen’s original version of the logo from years ago. What if that original theme was updated with the new colours?
A couple of minutes with paster create and I came up with this. I can’t decide what I think about it, opinions?

Looks better (or maybe it’s just because it’s different/newer?). One thing though is that the borders of the portlets should be removed IMHO because with the darker blue they tend to get in the visual way even more.
BTW, it might also be nice to have some theme where it’s more like those 3-column blog layouts where 2 columns are on the same side, e.g. on the right one.

it’s hard to tell from such a tiny image, but, please, remember about *contrast*. it’s not OK if you have a single tone besides black and white. it looks distinctly amateurish like this.

reinis: I’m not suggesting replacing the default theme with something I knocked up in a couple of minutes out of curiosity

Interesting.
The less cluttered pizza layout is easier on the eyes but so far I still like the older version of the tabs. I wonder how the pizza layout would look but with your blue tabs.
Speaking of color. I like the new bolder blue but I wonder how long before the novelty wears off. IMHO, a weakness with all the designs so far is the lack of variety to the color palette. The bolder blue helps but after a while all these single color designs with minor tonal variations tend to look as exciting as grayscale.
