The hat: Work placement / Sandwich year

The elevator pitch:

a varied and wholesome position for those who want to start the journey in digital media. Accompanied all the way by Team Rubber's guides, creative sherpas and expert navigators.

The work:

a full time work placement in our Bristol studio, starting in April, May or even June.

You've spent some time studying how to make clever things look pretty and add complicated features using the means of a keyboard, mouse and hopefully imagination..... how about getting paid to apply these skills by working for a fun, creative, well-run agency that will improve you as a professional without requiring you to wear a suit?

Your time will be divided between the three companies that make up Team Rubber, meaning you'll be doing a diverse range of things: from working on websites to contributing towards Flash games and even helping out with the odd spot of filming.

The responsibilities:

daily attendance (smile compulsory) with willingness and ability to deal with a pretty wide range of tasks, including:

  • creating and manipulating standards compliant HTML and CSS
  • working with Zope, Python and MySQL
  • testing, code review and quality assurance (QA)

The things at which you're awesome:

you'll show technical expertise, communication skills and enthusiasm. We expect you should have the following:

  • a good amount of experience with standards compliant HTML and CSS (this is essential)
  • good base knowledge of Flash
  • an intimate relationship with Photoshop
  • knowledge of good sandwich combinations
The following are not essential, but may just aid your chances:
  • previous experience of 'real' projects (not just university based work, but perhaps that website you made for your neighbour's dog's cat's cousin)
  • Some technical knowledge of web languages (PHP, Python) and web based server admin
We suspect you're studying a computer science/interactive media-based course at a good university, though this is not a strict rule. Above all we look for talent and commitment.

Interested? Feel free to read more, but to apply mail Katrina with a covering letter, 2 page CV and relevant portfolio.

The rewards:

we'll be investing in you, spending time teaching you stuff and encouraging your study in relevant areas. Not to mention we'll give you real goals on real projects for real clients - which makes it all way more interesting.

  • Experience - for your CV and so you can figure out what kind of job you want to do when you graduate: agile and creative, or corporate foot-soldier?
  • Training & skills: your code and designing eyes will improve and so will your team working skills.
  • We'll also pay you, because we're nice like that

The people you'd work closest with:

  • Alex and Heather, our project directors
  • Alan, Ant, Jess, Lisa and Owen, our development team
  • Andy, one of our directors
  • Ben, Gez and Kirk, our consultants & new biz guys

The view from the coal face:

"A whole lot more fun and inspiring compared to the formalised, expensive and educational equivalent" - Alaric King, Multimedia Student, Canterbury
